The secret lake

Out of respect for UCM over at Extended Psychosis and her desire to keep “her” special lake special, I will not reveal the name of the beautiful and sacred place Jon and I visited over the weekend. But I will tell you that it has not lost its hold over me, and it, to my delight, charmed Jon as much as it has me, UCM, and the hundreds of other visitors who visit the secret Lake yearly in order to restore their spirits.

Although the special cabin is even nicer now that it has a sturdier bed and a shower that does more than spit on you, one slow drizzle at a time, the elk herd we stumbled across at dusk (12 or 13- including infants), and the two otters we saw playing in the lake were new wonders for me. The most delightful of the new experiences was (nude) swimming in the bracingly cold river that feeds the lake. A few-hour canoe trip and we were deep in the center of silence- just our shivering laughs and a few birds. Lovely. Surrounded by mountains on all sides- having nature in and around me in that way was refreshing to my body and my heart.

It was a nice way to end the summer here.
