day of the dead & nablowrimo

It’s the first of November, All Saints’ Day, Day of the Dead and the possibility of 1 of thirty days of writing in a row.

Why? Why write every day on the ol’ blog?

It merely provides the structure of commitment. The commitment to write every day.

So here goes. This year, my first to try to blog every day (I didn’t always blog every day for NaPoWriMo – the one year I did it), I will commit to the Day of the Dead on one end of the holiday spectrum with a view to Thanksgiving at the end of the month. Fodder? My grandmother’s funeral last Wednesday in De Leon, Texas and the family ties that were strengthened and strained through that time.

And the news I got today. Through my husband, who wanted me to have one good night’s sleep, that my mother is facing the very real possibility of open-heart surgery. She’s to have a test January 6th that will enable her cardiologist to see just how bad her heart is. Seems the one functioning ventrical is blocked. This is serious business because she’s got a diseased heart that only works at 40% capacity. And she’s got a leaky blood valve (could have been around quite a long time) and an aneurysm on the one functioning half of her heart. She’s also got a blocked carotid artery feeding her brain. And spots on her kidney, and … (I might not have all the terminology down, but let’s just say she nearly died two years ago and the doctors initially gave her a five year outlook. They changed their story later, backpedaling.)

I free wrote on the plane yesterday – actually, I knit on the plane and wrote at the pre-flight bar with a couple of glasses of Stella – some of the details of Wednesday. I’ll write about that during November, and other things, too. The Mexican Day of the Dead is a celebration of death and life.
