Something Borrowed (for Freedom to Marry)

This post is written for the OTHER mother, where a carnival for Freedom to Marry is underway. Today is about “something borrowed.” And yes, tomorrow is “something blue.”

I don’t think civil unions are enough. I mean, they are a start; they give some legal protection to devoted partners. I cannot imagine the pain of being excluded from end-of-life decisions, and civil unions are at least a short-term remedy to some legal problems.

But civil unions remind me of how museums are “given” important work “on permanent loan.” What kind of legalese is that? Why not say “gift of” if the benefactor must be named. (Clearly I am not wealthy enough to understand the benefits of such tricky arrangements.)

Imagine. Mr. David and Mr. William Cooperman, on permanent loan from the estate of the Cardinal of Old-fashioned Family Values.

Let them marry.

Sometimes I’d like to borrow …

A small child to take to the movies
or read Wind in the Willows with.
A long fur coat to wear to Saturday
night’s premier of La Boheme.
Someone else’s good name for perfect
seats at the US Open, women’s finals.
Keys to a mountain cabin that overlooks
a glacier fed lake, with lots of firewood & kindling.
A body guard to escort me through dark scary
neighborhoods on my way to a dark scary nightclub.
A current encyclopedia with a flesh & blood
reference librarian, in my home library.
A better set of golf clubs tennis racquet bowling
ball croquet mallet to see if it helps my game.
A hot young woman’s figure, then turn it
in when it gets too hot.
Time, without having to give it back.

When it comes down to it, since I am long past the age and circumstance where I can borrow my roommates’ cute clothes, there is little I’d like to borrow, in this life, except books and the beautiful planet we live on.

A big PS: I am not in favor of slaughtering animals for their fur.
