I’m not one for Valentine’s Day. There too much pressure to have some love, visible. Buy cards, flowers, chocolates, dinner out. It’s not news that it’s a manufactured holiday, overblown. It’s not sustainable, it’s not real, it’s a business.
But I am for love.
And the freedom to pursue happiness.
To have equal rights under the law.
Marriage is a social construct. An important one with rights and privileges. But it is not a club where only certain types can enter the door. It is not a weapon to protect possessions or an act of violence. It’s a promise to look after another.
There should be more marriage, not less. It’s not a luxury whose selective rarity makes it precious.
Open the doors, people. Let those who want to marry, marry.
That would be a happy Valentine message of love. Now head over to the OTHER mother with open arms.
