Here’s a birthday confession: It’s one of those years I can’t recall how old I am. I’ve been starting on this number for over a year. I did the same thing when I was 36. Couldn’t remember if I was 37 or 36.

Going to Newport, Oregon for 3 nights. With my dear husband, AND our dog, Sport, who hasn’t been to the beach yet. (He’s been in our home one year and a week.) Yesterday was gorgeous in Portland; today it’s raining. It is supposed to get gorgeous again tomorrow, and stay that way until Tuesday. It will be nice at the beach, but about 10-degrees colder and a partly cloudy. I don’t care. In April it can do anything, and all at once. Whatever weather we get is good!

I am bringing my latest read with me as well as Ivy Alvarez’ Mortal and Lucille Clifton’s Bless in the Boats. And my NaPoWriMo 2009 journal, which is being used. Every day. Woot. poem. is looking at Ivy’s “Moth” this month, and while I am “behind” I hope to catch up!

Saturday night there is a haiku poetry slam (organized by Nye Beach Writers/Writers on the Edge) I might go to and might join in on. Might.
The popular Haiku Slam Classic is a four-team poetry competition, scored by the audience in a format similar to a diving event where judges hold up numerical scores. All poets are randomly grouped into teams, which may have three or four members depending on the number of people who sign up.
Possibly poetry-related: oysters, tide pools, aquarium (jelly fish, oh how I love to see your stinging neon lights; otters!; seabirds!; more!), romantic walks on the beach, wet-puppy-getting-me-filthy walks on the beach. I have’t been to the beach since I took my mom for the day last year. I used to live at the beach in California and it is shocking, sometimes, how removed from my old lives I am.

I got new contacts, new sunglasses, and new hair for my birthday. Vane girl stuff. How fun is that?
