Bragging

Got my student evaluations back from the course I taught this summer. The good news feels extra sweet today, considering I am feeling like I am coming apart at the seams. Thought I would brag a bit. :-)

**

What do you like best about this course?:

The Professor was interesting and was able to answer most of the questions asked about the material.

learning about the stigmas of mental illness.

I REALLY enjoyed the film comparisons. I found the two films the professor had us compare to be both very interesting, entertaining, and educational. I believe that that assignment was what really helped me understand mental illness from a sociological perspective. I think that all of the movie clips the professor showed us were EXTREMELY helpful! It was really great to be able to learn about something and then to actually see it visually in a real life setting.

The subject itself was very interesting and I loved the fact that the professor took her time to answer all of the students’ questions.

The way the teacher presented the material was extremely interesting and also very easy to grasp. She used a lot of relevant videos which also helped to keep the 4 hour class from getting boring.

I learne so much that I didn’t know before. The instructor was very honest and straightforward with her explanations of things.

If you were teaching this course, what would you do differently?:

nothing.

I would maybe just change the first few lectures a little bit. Possible consolidating the epidemiology/biology/psychology lectures into one or maybe two lectures since this is a sociology course. That way there is just more time to discuss the sociological aspect of it. I found those lectures to be very interesting, but they were just as long as the sociological approaches and they were not covered as much on the midterm.

I would shorten the class, 4 hours was too long in my opinion.

In what ways, if any, has this course or the instructor encouraged your intellectual growth and progress?:

I know alot more about mental health than I did before, it is very interesting and I enjoyed the course.

a lot of class discussion helped learning.

This class just helped me to look at myself and the world around me in a different way, especially when it came to the labels/stigma lecture. I also found the papers very inspiring and challenging (in a good way) because they really encouraged me to form an opinion. I loved that aspect of this class.

She made me more interested in the subject.

It makes me want to learn even more in the field of sociology, and mental illness.

Other comments or suggestions::

I would just love for there to be more movie clips. I understand that it is hard to get clips of people with mental illnesses due to privacy issues and things like that, but I think that when I was able to actually see the mental illness it was so much easier for me to understand it in a very different very real way. I think that the instructor did a great job of dividing the class and of splitting the lecture between overviews of mental illnesses and different approaches to understanding the.

I enjoyed this class very much and Professor Burrows is a great professor.

She was was an excellent instructor and wise beyond her years. My only wish is that the class wasn’t 4 hours straight.

I’m so happy you are getting that kind of feedback. I’m not surprised, mind you, because I think you would be a terrific teacher. But having anonymous is a terrific thing — when they are thoughtful as these were!

Coming apart at the seams concerns me, though.

I’ll call in the next few days. K?

Thank you. :-) It was nice feedback.

I’m a bit worried about you, too. Seems life is hard sometimes. sucks.

Ahhh. I’m okay. Just having a tough time with mom, although tonight was a lot better. I think we both decided to not be so sensitive. ;-)
