In case my three followers didn’t know, I am getting to read my poetry along side an amazing group of poets. I am completely excited, and a little nervous, too. I’ve made my selections and am practicing so as to keep up with my brilliant friends. And I keeping pinching myself. This is so cool!

If you’re in Portland I hope you’ll come. If you’re not able to, geographically or otherwise, I hope we’ll be able to video the event. (Still trying to work that out.)

Sage Cohen will be hosting a Big Tent Reading on Saturday, July 17 featuring a number of poets involved in Big Tent Poetry. This online site provides weekly poetry writing prompts, friendly community, inspiration and fun. Come on out and celebrate poetry with Big Tent Poetry founders, contributors and participants.

Featured poets will include Tiel Aisha Ansari, Sage Cohen, Dale Favier, Deb Scott and Carolee Sherwood. We’d love to see you there. Get the details at Sage’s blog, Writing the Life Poetic. Tiel Aisha Ansari is a Sufi, martial artist, and data analyst living in the Pacific Northwest. Her work has appeared in Islamica Magazine, Untitled Country Review, The Lyric, Barefoot Muse, and the VoiceCatcher anthology. Her poetry has been featured on KBOO, Prairie Home Companion and MiPoRadio and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her collection Knocking from Inside is available from Ecstatic Exchange. Dale Favier is a massage therapist and a database administrator in Portland, Oregon. His poems have appeared in Qarrtsiluni and the print anthology Brilliant Coroners. Pindrop Press will be publishing a chapbook of his poems, Opening the World, this fall. Drafts of his poems and essays appear regularly, you might even say inexorably, on his personal diary, “Mole,” and he writes a column, “Minding Words,” for the Writing the Life Poetic Zine.

Carolee Sherwood is a painter, mixed-media artist and poet from New York State. Her poetry has been published recently in Pirene’s Fountain, Awakenings Review, Scythe and Hobble Creek Review and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She was one of the folks behind the poetry magazine and community Read Write Poem and is part of the creative team that produces Big Tent Poetry. In addition, she co-edits Ouroboros Review and writes reviews for Poets’ Quarterly. Read more about Carolee at her blog.

Deb Scott lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and pets. She blogs at “Stoney Moss” and was one of the folks behind the poetry magazine and community Read Write Poem. These days she is one of the ring-leaders at Big Tent Poetry. Deb’s poetry, prose and photography are published or forthcoming in a number of journals, including Qarrtsiluni, Tiny Words and Right Hand Pointing.

I’m delighted that my poem “Sometimes I Miss the Old Jealous Goddesses” is now published at qarrtsiluni.

It’s my fifth inclusion, and I am a little surprised by that. Thank you to Beth, Dave and the guest editors who create such a great venue.

This is also an example that sometimes writing to prompt can create an interesting work. “Sometimes, et. al.” was written to a Wordle prompt for the late Read Write Poem. Granted, it was a prompt I created, but the words were offered by other RWP community members: Joanne Johns and Neil Reid.

an oral confession

The interview on KBOO’s Bread and Roses show didn’t end up allowing me to read any poems, but it was a great time anyway. I got to meet Nicole Vulcan, who is quite a gal — she has all kinds of interesting, humane projects going as a caring feminist. And I got to meet VoiceCatcher President Carolyn Martin and Associate Editor Kristin Berger — great gals with great energy, who love poetry. And I had fun getting to promote Big Tent Poetry!

I practiced reading quite a bit before Friday night. Another impulse to improve that skill was the need to provide qarrtsiluni with a sound file of a poem for the upcoming “Modern Classics” edition, which I am thrilled to be a part of. You can’t hear that quite yet, but I also recorded another poem, one I wanted to read, previously published by the good women of Ourboros Review.

The cool thing is that I recorded it using my cell phone via Cinch (because of a tip on qarrtsiluni). It’s an easy way to record and the quality is much better than my laptop (and this current laptop is way better than my old one, which was inhabited by crickets, which I like, but not as part of a recording).

I’m not sure the show will be archived on the KBOO Bread and Roses web site, but if it shows up, I’ll let you know.

This Friday, the last day of National Poetry Month, I’m being interviewed by Nicole Vulcan for KBOO’s Bread and Roses show. It’s live around 6:15pm (ish). We’ll be talking about combinations of Portland, women, poetry & Big Tent Poetry!

I get to read a couple of poems, too. (So I need to figure out which ones!)

The co-host will be talking to a slam poet and part of the show is with one of the editors of VoiceCatcher, so perhaps I’ll read my poem that showed up there in 2008. I can’t wait. And I am a little (quite a little) nervous, too. Yay poetry! Yay April!

Luliole Press has been kind enough to publish some of my photos and a bit of prose in the newly released Winter 2010 issue. For me the nicest thing was being asked if something I’d posted here could be included in the issue, and being able to provide additional photos, too. The black background of LP shows off the photos, I think. Hope you enjoy the entire issue.

Oh! And the post is about birds and trees. How fortuitous, because tomorrow starts the latest carnival Festival of the Trees (see yesterday’s post if you want to) and Saturday I get to participate in Portland, Oregon’s Christmas Bird Count. Want to join me walk the streets of First Addition in Lake Oswego? Would love to have you! Or stay home and do a feeder count. I did that one year in the afternoon and it was convenient fun!

‘I and the Bird’ and poetry

I and the Bird #113 includes a snippet of one of my bird poems about bushtits. Go read the entire post. It has lots of bird poetry!

(This is a photo from a while back. Recently the sun hasn’t been shining and there have been a couple dozen bushtits feeding at this and a nearby suet feeder several times a day.)

Birds and poetry go together like burgers & fries, hot dogs & beer, red wine & chocolate. Just to name a few select pairings.

Ourboros Review Issue Four is live and includes one of my poems and three photos.

There are also lots of friends’ work in this issue, including my virtual IRL (sic) friends, Michelle McGrane & Elizabeth Polkinghorn, as well as many other blogging and Facebook pals. (Such as Dick Jones, who travels widely among writers I admire and J.P. Dancing Bear, whose birthday greetings and salutations are a constant delight — fine, fine poets both. The whole lot is. I am honored to be in such great company.)

Thank you to my friends Jo Hemmant, Carolee Sherwood and Jill Crammond Wickham for providing a beautiful home for words and art.

I got a package today. Hard copies of a beautifully illustrated journal that just so happens to have one of my essays in it, “Under the Kiwi Vine.” It’s only available in print, but is — especially if you love birds — worth it. LBJ: Avian Life, Literary Arts.

Noteworthy bonus: Dave Bonta’s friend and occasional guest poet, Todd Davis, has a beautiful work in this issue.
